How to Grow Tulips in a Vase Indoors

How to Grow Tulips in a Vase Indoors

  1. Choose a glass vase and add enough clear marbles or pebbles to fill about a third of the vase.
  2. Add the tulip bulb (pointed end up) on top of the marbles. Cover the bulb with a few more marbles or pebbles to help give the growing root support.
  3. Add fresh water into the vase. The water shouldn’t touch the bulb, but it should be very close, so that the roots will grow in
  4. Watch your beautiful tulips grow.

    1. where did it say to chill the bulb?

    2. You did not say...but here in the south we place them in the ref for several months before planting them outside.

    3. I agree... in SC we would chill them for a few weeks (3-5) to force the bloom into thinking it had been through a hibernation period.

    4. Same here in FL... we have to leave the bulbs in the fridge at least 6-8 weeks

    5. In Wisconsin we just carry them in from the car😂 Those few minutes are usually enough chillin'

  3. That is so neat! I may do that and set them all across the living room window sill. That would look so pretty!

  5. What do I do when the flowers die? Is there a way to cut it back and regrow the bulbs?

    1. 1 flowering season. Will regrow after another season.

    2. The green growth feeds the bulb, so to speak, through the hibernation period of winter. You could try force blooming it by putting the bulb in the refrigerator for 3-5 weeks, however, if it did work without the nutrients needed to strengthen for the coming year I doubt the bloom would be as healthy and robust. Maybe try rotating bulbs in and out of the refrigerator for nicer, long-term blooms.

  8. I don't see any marbles in these vases..once roots sprout you removed marbles or what??

    1. The marbles are actually flat and clear so the roots have probably covered them up and you just can't see them in the photo.

  9. How do you keep them till next year?

  10. I thought they had to freeze before you could do anything. They freeze in MT and come up starting February. Blooming just in the last couple weeks outside.

  14. Do you have to keep changing the water so it doesn't get nasty?

    2. The water evaporates, and you just have to add more to it every once in a while.

  15. Great idea ... thanks. Last Saturday I so enjoyed finally planting my tulip bulbs just outside my kitchen window. I woke up Sunday morning to find my little neighborhood grey squirrel digging them all up! He's a nice little guy, but not that nice!!! : )

    1. For outdoor bulbs planting with bone or blood meal keeps deer away, but squirrels like meat, so I'd love an answer too. My 🐕 dug up every bulb I'd planted in bone meal one year.

  17. How long will it take until there will be a full bloom. I would like to do this with my students' for mother's day...when should I start?

  18. The instructions say to "add enough clear marbles or pebbles to fill about a third of the vase." But in the photo, it isn't even a quarter of the vase. Was that just for a more dramatic photo, or will they do all right with so few marbles or pebbles? Do they need to be in direct sunlight? Also, what's the time frame: How long before they bloom? How long do they last? More details, please!

  19. How often do you change the water? Distilled water preferred when planted indoors like orchids?

  28. After reading the article I am confused. I am from PA where we just put the bulbs in the ground. I currently live in NC and I do not understand "chilling " the bulbs first. Does anyone know about this? I would love to do several of these for my office windowsill. It is a inexpensive way to add color

  29. tulip bulbs need a chilling period of at least 6-8 weeks, in PA we plant them in the fall and the winter chills them, if not planting outside, put in the refrig around Nov-Dec

    ReplyDelete
  30. no response from writer about chilling but I've always heard it was necessary for forcing. lot of disappointed people if they follow the directions without chilling.

  31. The fridge tricks the bulbs into thinking they have been dormant for winter and are now ready to bloom for spring. I really want to try this. I planted Parrot Tulips outside here in Ca and they did bloom but died away quickly with the heat.

Michigan is also like Wisconsin.....in that we just take them out of the car....

  33. I couldn't find tulip bulbs here in FL, decided on Calli bulbs...gonna put them in the fridge 1st...wish me luck!

  34. Yes Bulbs should be chilled just above freezing for a few weeks ( fridge is good) in the dark, till tip starts growing a tiny bit, about 1/2 inch. Then put in a south or west facing window. This post does not mention this.

  35. When is the best time to put the bulbs in water? I have a tulip plant so want to save the bulbs. Do I need to dry them out and store them until next year, as I presume they won't grow and flower again this year if I put them in water?
